Being intimate with your partner goes beyond the physical act of intimacy. It could also be about being comfortable around your partner, allowing you to be vulnerable with them. However, discoloration, texture, and overall genital appearance can make one anxious and shy.

Having pearly penile papules (PPP) or small bumps on your genitals, for instance, although harmless and non-contagious, could create tension and worry between you and your partner. And in most cases, it can make one feel embarrassed and less confident engaging in intimacy.

Suppose you’re dealing with PPP, and perhaps you may have some questions or concerns about them. In that case, this post can be for you. In this article, we’ll explore what PPP is and what you can do to get rid of them.

What Are Pearly Penile Papules (PPP)?

Pearly penile papules (PPP) are tiny bumps ranging from 1 to 4 millimeters (mm) in diameter that can grow on your genitals. They can be seen as clusters of pinkish-white bumps arranged in columns or rows surrounding the corona of the glans penis or sulcus. And in some cases, their color may also be in lighter or darker hues. Considering what PPP looks like, men often perceive them as pimples. The difference is that they don’t contain or excrete any pus.

While these bumps can cause distress, with some worrying that it might be an indication of an infection or sexually transmitted disease, note that these small growths are considered harmless, provided that they aren’t accompanied by other symptoms.

Fortunately, modern technology and advancements in medical research have paved the way for various treatments available to get rid of PPP.

What Causes Pearly Penile Papules (PPP)?

PPP affects about 14 to 43 percent of males. They’re commonly found in uncircumcised men and may often appear during the late phases of puberty stage, but any man can get them. Researchers and medical experts have also concluded that the residues probably cause PPP during the embryonic stage in the womb.

Intensive studies have also been conducted to ensure its correlation with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) such as genital herpes, gonorrhea, chlamydia, and human papillomavirus. Fortunately, there are no positive findings that make them contagious and infectious.

While PPP is believed to have no negative influence on men’s general health and wellness, you can opt to have it checked by your primary physician or urologist to rule out other potential causes and to ensure your safety.

How Can You Get Rid of Pearly Penile Papules (PPP)

As established earlier in this post, PPPs are harmless and don’t directly affect men’s health, nor are they contagious or a sign of infection. However, its presence can make you feel anxious and lower your confidence.

If you do want them gone, it’s essential to note that we don’t recommend do-it-yourself home kits. Dermatologists warn that removing skin growths at home can cause infection, bleeding and scarring, and you could miss something that needs treatment, such as genital warts.

With that, the following are the procedures that can help you get rid of PPP:

1. Radiosurgery

Radiosurgery may be expensive but can show promising results. A physician or medical examiner conducts an initial examination first to evaluate your medical history and if you’re physically fit to undergo the procedure.

With this treatment, a dermatologist removes the papules with a fine electrical tip under local anesthetic. Despite the name, this is electrosurgery, sometimes called radiofrequency “radiosurgery,” and it doesn’t involve radiation. This is recommended for 3 to 4 mm papules.

2. Cryosurgery

Cryosurgery (or Cryotherapy) is widely known for its effectiveness in treating and healing various skin growths, superficial skin cancer, and different types of lesions. It utilizes insulated canisters with liquid nitrogen to freeze and thaw the papules, just like the wart’s removal.

The continuous cycle can lead to tissue necrosis among the papules and ultimately shed off. Studies have also shown the positive effects of cold on the skin, cell regeneration, and overall restoration of the affected area.

However, the use of extremely low temperatures may not be for people with sensory problems. It’s, therefore, recommended to ask for medical advice from your primary physician before proceeding with the treatment.

3. Carbon Dioxide (CO2) Laser Surgery

Laser surgery has been used for decades now in treating superficial or deep tumors or lesions and wounds and enhancing the overall skin appearance. It’s the preferred procedure for people who are at risk for open surgeries and for those who are active and want to get back on track in no time.

You will be given a local anesthetic cream to numb the penis. Though it’s a painless procedure, the local numbness will fade away after a few hours and may elicit mild pain and discomfort. It may be costly but is usually effective, though scarring is possible.

Other Considerations

The three techniques mentioned above have been reported in small studies. And remember, treatment is cosmetic and optional. However, it’s essential that you seek proper medical consultation to ensure your safety and avoid false treatments.

Furthermore, here are some considerations you might need to know:

  • If you notice tiny bumps, itchiness, pain, or discomfort on your penis, have it checked by your trusted doctor right away. A series of examinations will ensure they’re benign and don’t pose potential health risks.
  • You must be honest about your medical history and even sex life – the number of partners, your latest intercourse, and other important details crucial in determining the condition’s cause and accurate diagnosis.
  • Avoid applying any topical creams, lotions, and ointments you may have seen in various advertisements and social media platforms without medical advice from your doctor. They may lead to penile skin damage and complications.

Wrapping Up

Pearly penile papules can occur on any man; they’re unpredictable and unpreventable. In most cases, they can cause psychological distress and anxiety, which can take a toll on your mental health. And while they’re known to be harmless and do not pose any health concerns, there are treatments that can help you get rid of such unwanted small bumps on your genital, as discussed in this article.

However, it’s essential to note that should you notice anything unusual in your genital appearance and texture, seek medical attention immediately to get the necessary treatment.
