How we choose what to cover
The Authentic Gay is written by its co-founders, Mark Krasner and Beatus Hoang, from South Florida, and by guest writers we invite. We cover the questions gay men actually ask us and each other: travel, sex, relationships, health, culture and everyday life. We write from first-hand experience where we can, and we say so when we are relying on research instead.
Guest writers
Some stories are written by guest writers, and every one of them carries the writer's own name in the byline. Guest stories follow the same standards as ours, and you can suggest a correction on any of them. Some guest writers run businesses they mention, and their stories say so; we were not paid or given anything to publish them. Guest writers do not get a profile page; their byline and the end of their story say who they are.
How we make money
We earn money from affiliate links. When you buy something through a link to Amazon or another store, we may earn a commission, at no extra cost to you. As an Amazon Associate, The Authentic Gay earns from qualifying purchases. Every story with affiliate links says so at the top, and affiliate links are marked for search engines. We do not run display ads. See our policies for the programs we take part in.
No brand pays for a verdict or a place on a list. If we ever publish a paid post, it will be labeled as sponsored at the top. When a brand supplied a post, it is labeled as a partner post.
Gifts and stays
Sometimes a brand gives us a product to try or a place to stay. When that happens, the story says so under the byline, for example "The brand provided this product for review." A gift does not buy a good review.
How we choose products
Our product roundups are picked by our editors from products we use or have researched. Rankings are our own, and no brand pays to be listed. We do not show live prices, because prices change; check the store before you buy.
Health and sex information
In October 2026 we fact-checked all 58 of our health, sex, drug, supplement and mental health stories against public health sources (including the CDC, NIH, FDA, WHO, NHS and SAMHSA) and peer-reviewed research. We corrected them in place, and each one now shows a note on what changed and a list of the sources we used. This was an editorial review, not a medical one; when a clinician reviews a story, we will name them and the date.
Our health stories are not medical advice. Talk to a doctor about your own health. If you are thinking about suicide or self-harm, call or text 988 in the US, or contact The Trevor Project at 1-866-488-7386.
Dates and older stories
Each story shows the date it was published, or the date we last changed what it says. Fixes to the site around a story do not count as an update. Stories about places and product roundups carry a note when they are more than two years old, and news stories and TV recaps reflect the time they ran.
Corrections
Spot something wrong? Tell us through our contact page and include the article link. We fix errors in the story itself, and when a correction changes what a story says, we add a note saying what changed and when.
